THE NEW ODIEL (1)

Files under General | Jan 23rd

INNOVATION adds today another unique editorial and graphic redesign to its list of worldwide list of newspapers.

This time in Huelva (Andalusia, Spain) with ODIEL, a regional newspaper that competes wit other local, regional and national newspapers, magazines, radio, television and new media.

So INNOVATION’s proposal was be more local than ever, be more glocal than ever.

Main changes: bold logo, fresh front page, easy to read typography, playing loud a big local/glocal story (the new immigrants in a region of emigrants).

Congratulations to the fantastic ODIEL team lead by its editor Agustín Samaniego and publisher Juan España, and to Javier, Giordano, Carlos, Mauri, Roberto, Luis and Ale, and a very young and creative newsroom that were helping INNOVATION’s Antonio Martin and Miguel Angel Jimeno to launch a more unique and compelling newspaper.

Above is today’s new front page, and below the old one.

More, later.

A SCOLDED TIMES OF LONDON EDITOR SWAPS HUMBLE PIE FOR A SLICE OF TORTILLA

Files under General | Jul 13th

article-1259553-08B6EC3B000005DC-81_468x642

The Editor of The Times got yesterday this letter from a well known reader, Miriam Gonzalez,  DeputyPrime Minister Nick Clegg Spanish wife:

Sir, Now that Spain has won the World Cup and Iker Casillas demonstrated on Sunday that he is an outstanding goalkeeper regardless of whether his girlfriend, Sara Carbonero, watches him from the touchline or not, it may be time for you to eat a bit of humble pie. Trying to blame Sara for Spain’s initial lacklustre performance while she was simply doing her job (“Spanish inquisition blames WAG after Swiss vanquish the favourites”, June 17) was not worthy of a newspaper that should treat women for who they are and not simply for what their male partners do. Miriam Gonzalez, London SW15

James Harding, the Editor, has replied to Ms González:

“Congratulations on your team’s victory in the World Cup. You in particular will be glad to know that we scrupulously recognise women for what they are and not what their partners do. We are not over fond of humble pie but if you, Sara Carbonero or Iker Casillas are ever passing, please do drop by for a slice of tortilla.”

Not a bad deal.

WE HAD PEP GUARDIOLA AND NOW WE HAVE VICENTE DEL BOSQUE

Files under General | Jul 12th

The quite man.

A first class coach keeping always a low profile.

Doing his job.

Not acting.

Not playing for the cameras.

The anti-Maradonna.

The anti-Mourihno.

Loved by his team.

Another great soccer coach in the same tradition of Barcelona’s Pep Guardiola.

A happy, happy man.

The Times of London reports about Vicente del Bosque comments after yesterday’s victory:

“Vicente Del Bosque, the Spain coach, refused to criticise either Webb or Holland, preferring to focus on his team’s feat in winning the World Cup two years after the European Championship.

“I’m here to speak about the beautiful things in football,” Del Bosque said.

“Holland played a good game. It was very intense, balanced and even. It was rough at times, but that’s part of football.

This final had quality football, offensive football, attacking football. Football is moving forward and, in this World Cup in South Africa, which has been an extraordinary success for this continent, the reward today was for beautiful football.”

Un Caballero Español”

A British gentleman!

EL MUNDO SHOWS THE REALITY OF THE JOBLESS PEOPLE IN SPAIN

Files under General | Mar 2nd

LASS CARACAS DE LA CRISIS

Just the faces.

The names.

And how much time without a job.

That’s direct.

Dramatic.

Moving.

Disturbing.

And compelling.

In a country with more than four million jobless people.

With a government that ignores the reality.

The New York Times reports:

Spain’s facts are scary: 18.8 percent unemployment; about half the age group under 25 out of work; €600 billion, or $820 billion, in mortgages outstanding after the end of a construction boom two years ago; and a real effective exchange rate that the E.U. Commission says is overvalued by 10 percent.

The startling thing in Madrid is its seeming absence. There’s a kind of lethargy instead. No crash program with specific goals to change the Spanish economy over the next weeks and months is coming from right-wing opposition. And the Socialist government of Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero

So the newsroom of EL MUNDO in Madrid shows the reality.

With this political indictment animated poster.

A “show, don’t tell” way to report.

Well done!

NB: INNOVATION’s Chiqui Esteban shows here the jobless figures in another dramatic way:

THE SPANISH CRASH: ZAPATERO AND THE STOCK MARKET

Files under General | Feb 5th

elperiodico.750

Yesterday the Spanish Prime Minister was with Obama in a Wahington “prayer breakfast” at the Hilton hotel.

Dammit!

More jobless people.

More deficit.

Less credibility.

Less money.

Less investments.

And Zapatero “praying” in Washington DC.

Well, neither, Good or the stock market listened.

5dias.750

El Periodico says God seems not to listen Zapatero, and ABC moves his editorial leader to the front page.

abc.750

When newspapers have front pages and headlines likes these ones, the political crash is imminent.

xornal.750

Less prayers, and more political wisdom.

Less prayers, and more political competence.

Less prayers, and more common sense.

So, let’s pray… for Zapatero.

Spain deserves a better government.

Not an aficionado!

i IN THE NEW YORK TIMES AND AT THE LISBON NEWSPAPER DESIGN SUMIT

Files under General | Nov 9th

: Capa : Página 2

The New York Times reports about i:

It would be hard to find a less promising country in which to start a newspaper than Portugal. Not only are readers defecting to the Internet, as they are elsewhere, but relatively few people ever picked up a paper to begin with. And print advertising has plunged by more than 40 percent this year.Yet while newspapers elsewhere are shutting down or grappling with an uncertain future, Portugal recently got a new one, called i, short for informação, or information.

“Everyone was astonished that they went ahead with the launch when they did,” said João Palmeiro, president of the Portuguese Publishers Association, referring to Lena Group, the Portuguese industrial conglomerate that owns the paper. But he added, “Most of the people are sticking with it once they read it.”

2009-11-09_0828

Well, this Thursday, the regional chapter of the Society of News Design holds its annual meeting in Lisbon with a fantastic program that includes the award ceremony for the best designed newspapers of Spain and Portugal.

And the editors of  i will explain and present the new paper.
