OUR INNOVATIONS IN MAGAZINES 2011 REPORT IS HERE

Files under General | Mar 8th

I just got the first hot copies.

128 pages of fantastic Sappi newsprint  full of ideas, trends, innovations and great content.

This is our second global report for FIPP, the Worldwide Magazine Media Association.

As his President, Chris Llewellyn says in the Introduction, this new report started last year has been “one of the FIPP’s most successful products.”

Edited by INNOVATION’s John Wilpers in Boston and Juan Senor in London, the report was designed by Javier Zarracina, with a great illustration cover of Deborah Withey that this year shines in amazing gold and silver inks of Polestar, and brilliant caricatures from Luis Gañena

A must-read interview Jonas Bonnier opens a report that will be presented in Berlin on March 14 at the FIPP Digital’s Innovators Summit.

“THE DAILY”: WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT NEWS CORPORATION FIRST USA NATIONAL TABLET PUBLICATION (2)

Files under General | Nov 19th

More news to add since my first post on THE DAILY, the News Corporation Tablet National Publication.

A newspaper?: No, a tablet-only publication.

A tabloid kind of publication?: Yes, It will be a bit like the New York Post, but national.

What about The Wall Street Journal Secret Digital Project announced by Robert Thompson?: It’s a separate project but could be a serious version of this “tabloid” one.

New Big Guns: Elisabeth Eaves as opinion editor, a former contributor to the Wall Street Journal, The New York Times and Slate; Avi Zenilman to cover business, from Politico and The New Yorker where he was online news editor; Chris Wilson, ex Maxim editor; Chris D’Amico, former managing editor of New Jersey’s Star Ledger has been named sports editor: Reihan Salam, a fellow at the New America Foundation, will be a columnist.

How many paid subscriptions they need?: at least 800.000

Annual revenue goal: around $400 million from readers and no clue about advertising, but $100 million could be a good start.

Frecuency: seven days a week.

Where are they now?: At the 26th floor of the News Corporation headquarters on Sixth Avenue, but very soon they will move to the ninth floor.

A New York-centric newsroom: no foreign bureaus.

Editorial voice: populist, and tabloid sensibility with a broadsheet intelligence.

Three managing editors: Mike Nizza, a veteran of The New York Times, AOL News and The Atlantic; Steve Alperin, a producer at ABC News, and Pete Picton, an online editor at The Sun in the U.K.

James Murdoch: “It’s a tablet-only product and it’s very exciting. You’ll hear more about that soon.” Yesterday in Barcelona during an investors conference.

More at our Harvard Tablets Summit.

Be there!

THE INMA/INNOVATION OXFORD TABLET SUMMIT (3): MORE SPEAKERS

Files under General | Apr 20th

2010-04-20_0920

I just got the last mailing about the INMA/INNOVATION Oxford Tablet Summit.

With two new speakers.

The right quotes from the editor of The Guardian, Alan Rusbridger:

“A tabloid newspaper page seemed exotically large, a broadsheet like a street hoarding. The iPad just seemed natural.”

“Has the Guardian ever looked more beautiful?”

And a great illustration by Luis Grañena.

APPLE COO TIM COOK TALKS ABOUT THE “SECRETS” OF THE STEVE JOBS COMPANY

Files under General | Feb 24th

tim_cook

A fascinating session at the Goldman Sachs technology conference with Tim Cook.

“We say no to good ideas every day.

We say no to great ideas in order to keep the amount of things we focus on very small in number so that we can put enormous energy behind the ones we do choose.

The table each of you are sitting at today, you could probably put every product on it that Apple makes, yet Apple’s revenue last year was $40 billion.

I think any other company that could say that is an oil company.

That’s not just saying yes to the right products, it’s saying no to many products that are good ideas, but just not nearly as good as the other ones.

I think this is so ingrained in our company that this hubris you talk about that happens to companies that are successful and sole role in life is to get bigger, I can tell you the management team at Apple would never let that happen.

That’s not what we’re about. Small list of things to focus on.”

Brilliant!

As I said in my Tablemania blog a few weeks ago, Tim Cook is the perfect candidate to become the next Steve Jobs.

NEXT MONDAY ON SALE, OUR FIRST “INNOVATIONS IN MAGAZINES” REPORT

Files under General | Feb 23rd

INNOVATIONS IN MAGAZINES COVER

The 2010 INNOVATIONS IN MAGAZINES World Report will be on sale and available online next Monday.

FIPP will be launching the first Innovations in Magazines report at its Digital Conference on 1 March 2010.

INNOVATION’s Juan Senor (London) and John Wilpers (Boston) are the co-editors of the new 100-page report.

The report is a global look at the most innovative initiatives to increase magazine reach, relevance, revenue, and readership.

The survey will highlight a series of magazine case studies and interviews showing initiatives that have a proven track record of being successful, focusing on identifying innovation in content-driven solutions. The study will be co-published by Innovation Media Consulting, which has also produced the annual World Association of Newspapers World Report for more than 10 years.

John Wilpers said: “If press reports were an accurate thermometer of the health of the magazine industry, publishers, editors and sales people would be out in droves looking for jobs in different industries. Instead, IINNOVATON found the brightest minds in the magazine industry to be bursting with innovative energy. Good news never makes the nightly television broadcast, but there is an abundance of good news as technology, out-of-the-box thinking, and old-fashioned hard work are enabling innovation that is delivering new readers, revenues and relevance to magazines around the world. The future of magazines is indeed bright, and we’ll show how and why in the first annual Innovations in Magazines report.”

Illustrated by Deborah Withey and Luis Grañena, and designed by Javier Zarracina, the first INNOVATIONS IN MAGAZINES is a fantastic report inspired by our two INNOVATION’s magazine gurus: Juan Caño and Thomaz Souto Correa.
