A BRAVE VIRGINIAN-PILOT: NO FEAR, BETTER THAN WORDS, AND A BOLD AND NECESSARY FRONT PAGE

Files under General | Jan 14th

1001quakevirginianpilot

My friend Denis Finley, editor of The Virginian-Pilot, explains:

“A disturbing image from the earthquake in Haiti appears on the front page of the Virginian-Pilot today. We typically refrain from publishing photos of the dead, but the tragedy in Haiti is unprecedented. To sanitize the story by publishihg a “safe” photograph would be an abdication of our responsibility to you. We believe this photograph captures the anguish and the toll better than any words ever could.”

Well done!

LE MONDE: BACK TO THE PAST

Files under General | Nov 18th

lemonde.750

Le Monde front page deserves some attention.

After several failed redesigns, now the paper seems to go backwards.

Today’s front page is an example.

Looks like the Monde that rejected pictures as a non rational content.

Well, if you want to connect with the new generations of readers, you better pay more atention to visual journalism.

Pictures matter.

Too wordy.

Back to the past.

THE FRONT PAGE OF i LOOKING TO THE OTHER SIDE OF THE NEWS: PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS JOURNALISM

Files under General | Nov 18th

i + -

This is an excellent front page from i, the National European Newspaper of the Year.

Instead to present just the bas news (more jobless people), the newspaper present the other side of the news: more people than ever are investing in their own education.

That’s a trend happening in many countries.

The negative/positive front page strategy is a good one.

Readers want to know the problems (well, let’s say that they need to know), but they looking for solutions.

Yes, the Problems & Solutions Journalism works.

It’s Smart Journalism!

This is a hell’s front page.

Compelling stories sell newspapers.

The only problem is that you have to be in Portugal to read i on print.

Or just taste this fantastic paper here in a brilliant website developed by Dos al Cubo that has been awarded as one of the best designed websites of Spain and Portugal at the ñH6 competition.

WORDS IN THE FRONT PAGE OF THE NEW LIBERATION

Files under General | Oct 14th

Just words.

A front page that changes with the news.

A “no formula” formula.

Something similar to what we presented in our early prototypes, like these two ones:

JUST WORDS LIBE FRONT PAGE

JUST WORDS AND GRANENA LIBE COVER

Here you can see all the front ages of “i”, the new Portuguese national quality newspaper, now posted on Flickr.

You can see also a few pictures of the state-of-the-art integrated multimedia newsroom designed by our partners Calau&Riera, and from the street sampling done during the first days of the launch.

Nick Mrozowski, art director of “i”, and his design team are doing a great job, and these front pages are a good example.

INNOVATION’s latest project in Portugal, the new “i” national, quality paper, has an interesting front page today.

As you know, “i” has a central macro-section devoted to the cover-stories of each day.

It’s called ZOOM.

So, why not tell the readers: look, these are our main stories, go inside if you want to know more.

This is zooming on the news.

Well done!
