THE WRONG CHOICE: NEWS VERSUS DESIGN

can_np.jpg

The National Post launched its new design yesterday and today it is paying a high price for a wrong decision with its new vertical name plate.

And the front page picture had to be cropped in order to fit with the aesthetics of the new format…

So, we lost the most dramatic part of the picture of the day: the killing of a photojournalist.

The Toronto Globe and Mail front page shows the whole picture.

The same bad choice was made by the Austrian Kleine Zeitung.

While the Canadian and Austrian papers made a terrible mistake, the International Herald Tribune presented the two photos in full.

Publico, the new Spanish viewspaper, selected another excellent picture.

Reuters has done a superb job covering the demonstrations.

Watch the killing of our colleague in this video from Reuters.

His death deserved a more sensitive news judgement and better photo editing.

What a shame!

Apple’s iPhone outsold all smartphones in the United States in July, its first full month on sale, research group iSuppli said on Tuesday.

ISuppli reiterated its forecast that Apple would sell 4.5 million iPhones this year, rising to more than 30 million in 2011.

The two models of the iPhone sold more than Research in Motion’s Blackberry series, the entire Palm portfolio and any individual smartphone model from Motorola, Nokia or Samsung.

The iPhone will be the bestselling Christmas phone in the country.

Wait and see.

THE MURDOCH-BANCROFT DEAL

Ken Auletta, media correspondent from The New Yorker, writes a long story about the Murdoch bid for Dow Jones.

Read it and you will see how the deal is almost done.

Money, money, money.

Don’t be confused.

The Bancrofts don’t care about quality journalism.

They never re-invested their profits.

They were there just for the easy and big dividends.

While Dow Jones was left behind by Bloomberg, Thompson, Reuters…

So, Murdoch can do it better.

Like him or not.

He is a newspaper publisher.

As Jeff Jarvis says in his great blog, they are just “absentee owners.”

THOMSON GETS REUTERS

Thomson and Reuters agreed on terms for a merger valued at about £8.7 billion ($17.24 billion).

Reuters Chief Executive Officer Tom Glocer, 47, will become CEO of the combined company, named Thomson-Reuters.

Thomson Chief Executive Richard Harrington, 60, has agreed to retire, the companies have said.

The Thomson family of Canada will hold 53% of a combined company.

The agreement sets the stage for a long battle with regulators to win clearance for a combination that would unite the second- and third-largest providers of financial news and data, behind Bloomberg.

MORE THAN £2.6M FOR MADELEINE: A GLOBAL HUNT

Files under Algarve, Fatina, Madeleine, Portugal, Reuters, internet | May 13th

Pay attention to this story.

A local story that has become a global one.

Madeleine is now a girl known around the world.

Why?

Mainly because of the Internet.

And the hunt for the criminals is global, too.

The Observer’s front page story today says “the support is overwhelming.”

The flyers are on Fatima and everwhere, as you can see in these Reuters pictures.

Including video-prayers.

Many celebrities are now asking for help.

From Richard Branson to David Beckham or Cristiano Ronaldo, they’re begging for Maddy’s safe return.

Speaking in English and Portuguese, 22-year-old Ronaldo said: “I was very upset to hear of her abduction.”

Wearing a yellow ribbon, Chancellor Gordon Brown added his support for the McCanns.

Speaking in Gillingham, Kent, he said “My thoughts, like the thoughts of all parents, are with Maddie’s parents.”

Harry Potter author JK Rowling put up a staggering amount — the largest single donation.

But she asked us not to reveal the exact figure.

JK married a Portuguese TV journalist and her first child, Jessica, was born in Portugal, a few hours drive from Praia da Luz where Maddie was snatched 10 days ago.

An appeal for sightings of Madeleine will be made at the Spanish Grand Prix this weekend.

For Portugal this is a global nightmare.

A worlwide tourism campaign is promoting the Algarve as one the best European destinations for family holidays.
