U.S. NEWSPAPERS MADE A 12% PROFIT IN 2008

Surprise.

United States newspapers had a healthy 12% profit in 2008.

And a 15% profit for newspapers with less than 15,000 copies.

The Inland study shows, Alan Mutter says, that “Compared with other industries, however, publishers on average still are doing remarkably well… A 12% profit margin is more than double that achieved last year by Wal-Mart Stores, the largest of the Fortune 1,000 companies. A 12% pre-tax profit is just about a percentage point light of the margins run by Exxon and Chevron, the second and third largest corporations behind Wal-Mart on the Fortune list.”

UPDATE: The Inland Press Association today reissued the summary of the study on which this post was based. The major change is that 12% is the average profitability of large newspapers in the last five years, not solely in 2008.

Online ads to overtake US newspapers

The story:

The rapid growth of online advertising is expected to see the sector overtake US newspaper advertising in terms of size by 2011.

The forecast comes against a backdrop of declining advertising sales reported by newspaper groups this year in spite of continued strength in the US economy.

The findings are from a widely-watched annual research report on the media sector by Veronis Suhler Stevenson (VSS).

In the 2007 study, published on Tuesday, VSS forecasts that online advertising will grow by more than 21 percent per year to reach $62 billion in 2011, making it bigger than newspaper advertising, which is expected to total $60bn in 2011.

“The path of online advertising and newspaper advertising is a continuation of what we’ve been observing for many years, but it is finally getting to the point where the lines will cross,” said James Rutherfurd, managing director at VSS.

The VSS forecasts also illustrate the lag between changes in consumers’ behaviour and advertising spending.

The survey also measured the time spent on different media, and in 2007 the amount of time spent reading newspapers is expected for the first time to be overtaken by time spent online.

Spending by companies on information and media, including business-to-business magazine and trade shows, is also increasing, up 8.1 per cent in 2006 to $227 billion.

“Knowledge and information industries drive the US economy, meaning that information is a critical tool,” said Mr Rutherfurd.

“Companies are prepared to pay a lot of money to get that information.”

Good news if you are in the informartion business.

Bad news if you are in the newspaper printing business.

THE NEW SPANISH AND PORTUGUESE NEWSPAPER DESIGN

I am in Spain for a few hours.

With Carlo Campo, publisher of LATINO, I went to Burgos where today and tomorrow the Spanish Chapter of the Society of Newspaper Design (SND) has its third annual congress about the best Spanish and Portuguese Newspaper Design.

They presented the annual awards and a compact but very rich and well designed “graphic annual” with all the winners.

Get it (30 euros) at the SND-E website, and you will see a great panorama.

As I was the first president and founder of the Spanish Chapter of the SND (Javier Errea, an INNOVATION Consultant is now the current president and the force behind this contest), I told the very young audience that in the past newspaper designers, photographers, illustrators and infographists were very important “agents of change” and that , in my opinion, they are now part of the problem.

I see, more and more, that the new “agents of change” are the online journalists.

Well, I don’t see why “visual journalists” can not be again part of the solution.

They must.

And they will be, for sure.



WHAT ABOUT TOMORROW? THE LAST NIGHT DIFFICULT DILEMA OF MANY PRINT NEWSPAPER EDITORS AFTER THE AMERICAN ELECTIONS

Watching TV, looking at news web sites and blogs, my impression is that more and more, print newspaper editors are going to have a difficult time to produce compelling and “necessary” newspapers.

The Virginian ones, with an election with no clear winner couldn’t have the front page that they expected.

Deadline oriented print newsrooms are going to have a rough time.

Newspapers need to plan more.

Give analysis.

Explain the news behind the news.

And forget the “last news” that were in the past our franchise.

Not anymore.

They are going for ever.

Doesn’t matter that still many newspapers and newsrooms are organized and work in this way.

These are the first newspapers that are going to die.

Very fast.

Very soon.
