CHILEAN MINERS RESCUE: THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE NEWS

Files under General | Oct 14th

NPR has today a great story about the people behind the drilling.

When the miners were found in August, many feared that they might not be rescued until Christmas.

So Brandon Fisher, president of drill bit manufacturer Center Rock, convinced that a shaft could be drilled faster contacted the rescue operation, and Center Rock supplied several of its pneumatic drilling systems.

They spent 37 days in Chile.

This private company based in Berlin, Pennsylvania (staffed with 74 employees) deserves a lot of credit for an innovative pneumatic-based drilling system that uses four hammers instead of one and was able to drill through as much as 40 meters of rock per day.

Center Rock’s CEO Brandon Fisher was there with his team, and they are, too, real heroes.

THE TIMES OF LONDON: 14 PAGES DEVOTED TO THE CHILEAN MINERS RESCUE OPERATION

Files under General | Oct 14th

This must be another record.

Cover, leading ditorial, 10 page-special and two page feature in the T2 section.

Total: 14 pages!

The package is a busy one, and this double spread with photos is just an example.

A first class analysis from Ben Macintyre plus a lot of trivia, more photos and at the end you have the feeling that they wanted to do what The Sun does very well in the so call “earthquake journalism” but The Times doesn’t do as well.

So, again, “if you cannot play well, at least play loud”

EUROPEAN NEWSPAPERS FACE THE DAY AFTER CHALLENGE

Files under General | Oct 13th

The rescue news from Chile arrived late to Europe so you will not find any major front page or coverage in today’s editions.

American newspaper had a better chance but in general the pattern was Big Pictures (TV was better) and Big Words (TV was better).

So, what we can expect tomorrow in the front pages of the best European newspapers?

Well, not too much.

They will try again the Big Pictures and Big Words easy game.

Ignoring that the rescue was a worldwide TV event and it’s going to be difficult to add new angles and clues to the big news of the day before…

Yes, I know that this is always difficult, but newspaper editors had many week in advance to plan for this magic moment.

TV did its work.

I watched BBC, News Sky News and CNN Chile and all of them did a superb job.

What European newspapers readers expect tomorrow is not to see again the same pictures, the same infographics, and the same news, but a more creative, analytical, pro-active and “news behind the news” stories.

But I doubt that our newspapers will do it.

Instead, like in music and as our grandmother will tell us when we were little ones, “if you don’t play well, at least play loud”

So expect more empty noise.

SECOND SECTIONS NEVER WERE GOOD, AND THE T2 IS AN EXAMPLE

Files under General | Oct 13th

The Times editor writes today:

Dear Reader,

As you will have noticed from this morning’s paper, Times2 is back. It returns, bigger and better.

When we introduced our new daily sections earlier this year, many readers wrote to say how much they loved the greater coverage of food, fashion, health and the arts. Many others were thrilled at the introduction of Mind Games, offering more brain-aching Su Doku and more infuriating puzzles than ever before.

But many of you wrote to say how sorely you missed the second section. Letters came in saying how much you loved The Times’s distinctive run of features. It was clear how deeply you shared Times2’s passions, its sense of humour, its cares, its intelligence, its campaigning spirit.   And, even though Times2 had simply moved to a new home, many of you felt a loss. It was obvious how much you relied on a separate section for the TV and radio listings, as well as a smart guide to film, music, theatre, dance and the arts. And, most of all, you missed having a paper that you could share: The Times, in two parts – or, as one person put it, two papers for the price of one.

Well, he is wrong.

The problem with the T2 section is the content and the design.

Both are really bad.

Content and design are trashy.

That’s the problem, my dear!

“Readers want” is another excuse to change in order to avoid real changes

T2 compared with the trendy and crispy G2 of The Guardian looks like a second class section.

So instead, give me less pages, and a more and better edited newspaper.

A Compact and compelling newspaper.

Work  harder for me (reader and subscriber of The Times) and don’t be bother about focus group “instant miracle solutions”.

Many of these new separate section were created because, we were told, advertisers want it.

Well, the T2 is almost empty of paid ads.

Why?

Because advertisers know better: it’s a poor product.

Integrated or standing alone.

This doesn’t matter.

Good content and brilliant design is what really matters.

INNOVATION’S I BECOMES THE BEST DESIGNED NEWSPAPER OF SPAIN & PORTUGAL

Files under General | Oct 10th

Six months after its launch “i” became the “European Newspaper of the Year” and now becomes “the best designed newspaper of Spain & Portugal”.

The SND-E big award to “i” is an award to the visual team that on daily bases produces one of the most creative newspapers of the world.

A total number of 2.384 works from 70 media from both countries participated in the contest this year, exceeding last edition’s participation record (62 media): 2.153 were from 53 printed media and 248 from 17 online publications.

This is a great example of how a new paper gets better and better after the take-off.

The INNOVATION editorial concept and Javier Errea’s fantastic design have been improved day by day, so the real credit goes Nick Mrozowski (Creative Director) and Pedro Fernandes (Art Director).

They deserve our gratitude and admiration.

Well done!

More great front pages of “i” here.
