“I felt I needed to be a direct agent of change, I promise you I will not disappoint in that,” Mr. Zell said at a Tribune town hall meeting in December 2007, the day he became the company’s chief executive. “If you look at the numbers, instead of listening to the pundits, the bottom line is this company has significant cash flow going forward — and we don’t think we will have any significant problems serving the debt.”
Less than one year later, the Tribune Company has filed for bankruptcy.
