Evan Bayh’s potential selection as the Democrats Vice-presidential nominee would make the election in Indiana very interesting, because Indiana hasn’t went Democratic since 1964. Indiana only went in the Democrat colume three times in the 20th century: 1912, 1936, and 1964.

The year 1964 is significant in Presidential history since that was the last time a Democratic Presidential nominee captured a majority of the white vote.

The major problems with a Bayh selection is that if an Obama-Bayh should win in November the Democrats would give up a seat in the U.S. Senate in January. Indiana’s current Governor Mitch Daniels, a Republican, also running for re-election this year, if re-elected would select Bayh replacement who would be a Republican. Probably, Congressman Mike Pence.

The second problem is Bayh has often been viewed as too conservative for his party’s establishment. It would make McCain’s job that much tougher because Indiana is usually the first to be called on election night, and generally, put easily in the Republican column. With Bayh Indiana has a good chance of going Democrat.

But as the old saying goes in Presidential politics, “you don’t buy the car because of the spare tire.” Obama’s has the problem of being the “etch-a-sketch” candiate, he changes his policies daily.
