DON’T GET THE NEW APPLE iPHONE ‘MOBILEME’

It’s crap.

Steve Jobs is mad.

And iPhone costumers are, too.

In an internal e-mail, Steve Jobs admitted that MobileMe was launched too early and “not up to Apple’s standards.”

Good to know.

For people who already subscribed to .Mac (read: me, though mostly out of habit, since I’d stashed so much stuff on iDisk), Apple made the move to MobileMe automatically. And given the well known weaknesses and age spots showing in the .Mac service, for those subscribers MobileMe — except for the initial outages — represented a modest improvement.

That said, given all the good choices out there for cloud computing and synchronization of connected devices, MobileMe still has far to go. If I were choosing from scratch, I would not choose it, at least not yet.

If Jobs’ anger lights fires under Apple engineers, give MobileMe about six months and I’ll bet it’s competitive then.
