NEWSPAPER ADVERTISING MADE EASY (IN MEMORY OF LEO BOGART)

Google is selling our newspaper ads!

While our print advertising was sleeping… Google entered our business.

But, don’t blame them.

Thank them.

They believe in print advertising.

They are able to explain how powerful our print platforms are.

And they are making money — and getting money for us.

Kudos to Google and shame on the sleeping beauties.

Watching this presentation, INNOVATION’s late Leo Bogart came to my mind again and again.

He pioneered the “one ad, one bill” idea, but even today, publishing the same ads in many newspapers is a nightmare.

He would be very sad, and very happy.

“I told you so …”

Leo told us for many years that “newspapers don’t die for lack or readers, but for lack of advertisers.”

Which is why I will not stop saying, again and again, that our business managers need to be accountable.

The current newspaper crisis in many countries (in the U.S. for sure) is more a crisis of our business managers than our journalists.

Marketing and advertising managers, wake up!

(Thanks to Alvaro Moncada)

Let’s see. Their foray into print advertising with magazines in 2005 wasn’t very successful; it’ll be interesting to see what they’ve learnt since.
