POLITICAL TV DEBATES: THE BEST RULE IS NO RULES, JUST REAL JOURNALISTS

After a few days in Spain, last night I was able to watch the Feb. 26 Ohio TV debate, which MSNBC telecast from Cleveland State University.

One of the first things that Brian Williams, anchor of “NBC Nightly News,” said was:

There are no rules.

No rules.

So, just two journalists confronting two politicians.

Just two journalists, Williams and Tim Russert, NBC News’ Washington bureau chief, and real questions.

The two candidates, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama did, as always, a superb job.

Compare this debate with the Spanish one and you’ll see a dramatic difference between both TV shows.

The problem is the Spanish electorate does not have any other option right now.

Americans are really fortunate.

Here, there are real options.

Real political debates.

And real TV journalism.
