I have been in Spain this weekend.
To my surprise, the weekend editions of the Spanish newspapers are bigger than ever.
And we are in January when the advertising is very low.
Diario Navarra, a regional newspaper, has more than 100 pages on Saturday plus a glossy women’s magazine.
El Pais, El Mundo and ABC in Madrid, and La Vanguardia and El Periodico in Barcelona combined printed more than 1,500 pages …
Too many pages.
Too much fat.
This is cancer.
Not healthy.
Not smart.
Not profitable.
Crazy!
The new national newspaper Publico is the only one without too many pages in only one section, but this is a marginal newspaper with very small circulation and less advertising.
My impression is this: Spanish newspapers need a pagination diet.
Spanish readers need more and better information with fewer pages.
Caviar.
Not cheap potage!
