In Portugal they selected a colorful picture.
Nice, but wrong.
Form over substance.
Design over news.
Instead, in China they did real photojournalism.
Editing and selecting the right photo of this historic crossing.
President Roh left the South Korean capital, Seoul, in a motorcade along with business leaders, bureaucrats, poets and clerics.
But the convoy stopped at the demilitarized zone to allow the president and his wife, Kwon Yang-sook, to cross into the North on foot - the first time a South Korean leader has ever done this.
They stepped across a yellow plastic tape, printed with the words “peace” and “prosperity”.
“I do hope after my crossing that more people will follow suit,” said President Roh at the border.
“This line will gradually be erased and the wall will fall.”
Watch the BBC video to see why this was the right photo choice.
The lesson:
Newspapers, and front page editors, need photo editors.
The Chinese paper has an excellent one.
If I were the editor of Diario de Noticias in Lisbon, my friend Joao Marcelino, I would hire him.
