Many years ago, I was working for O GLOBO in Rio de Janeiro.
At a 6 p.m. news meeting, the local editor tells Evandro Carlos de Andrade, O GLOBO’s executive editor:
“Sorry Evandro, but nothing happened today…”
Evandro responds:
“Don’t worry, Rio never dissapoints. Just wait”
Two hours later, news came about six people killed in a violent gun fight with the police.
Evandro looked to me and repeated:
“You see, Juan Antonio, Rio never disappoints”
I remembered this story today looking at these pictures and watching this video.
While the Brazilian president, Lula, was in Sweden enjoying a royal carriage, Reuters reports that gunmen opened fire on a train carrying two government ministers as it passed through a Rio de Janeiro slum on its inaugural run. The train, which was headed to an official ceremony at Rio’s port, was riddled with bullets but no one was hurt.
