THE ‘WEEKEND NEWS VACUUM,’ A GREAT OPPORTUNITY

From Monday to Friday, most newspapers get a lot of “news,” but don’t have too many readers or ads.

From Saturday to Sunday, the same papers don’t have much “news,” but have a lot of readers and ads.

As we all know, on Friday night, many newspapers produce two editions: Saturday and Sunday papers.

So… as we are very busy those nights, that’s when public relations companies send us the worst press releases.

They know that we will not be able to react, double-check, confirm, analyze or comment… until the Tuesday paper.

My point is this:

There is a huge opportunity for newspapers to get a more successful edition if they:

Find the news… and not just record it.

Produce breaking news, on the Web first, and in print later.

Work 24/7 to deliver “all the news, all the time.”

On Weekends and during weekdays.

Our readers are eager for real news.

Not the “news” generated by sources.

By the politicians.

By the PR offices of business companies.

By them… and not by us.

The weekend news vacuum is a great opportunity.

The weekdays too.

During the weekend we survive with stories and no news.

During the weekdays we die with “news” and no stories.

If we want to survive, the only answer is:

Have your own news agenda.

Find real news.

Tell exclusive stories.

Be the first.

Be unique.

Period.
