The World Association of Newspapers (WAN) announced today in Paris:

Innovations in Newspapers: Multimedia Newsrooms and the Best of the Rest

Newspapers are changing their newsrooms from print-only to multimedia at an accelerating rate.

Lessons from the best newsroom conversions will be presented in the 2007 Innovations in Newspapers Global Report, a highlight of the World Newspaper Congress and World Editors Forum to be held in Cape Town, South, Africa, from 3 to 6 June next.

The report, presented by the Innovations International Consulting Group, is an annual highlight of the Congress and the Forum.

In addition to newsroom conversions to multimedia “information centres,” this year’s presentation will highlight innovations in newspaper redesign, websites, citizen journalism, infographics, magazines and supplements, workflow and more.

More than 1,500 newspaper publishers, chief executives, managing directors, editors and other newspaper professionals are expected to attend the 60th World Newspaper Congress, 14th World Editors Forum and Info Services Expo 2007, the global meetings of the world’s press organised by the World Association of Newspapers (WAN).

There is still time to register. Full details of the events, hosted by the Newspaper Association of South Africa, can be found at

The Innovations presentation, in a joint session of the Congress and Forum, includes case studies but, more importantly, discussions about the impact of these innovations with the publishers and editors who have introduced them.

Delegates will also receive a free copy of the full report.

The Innovation group, in conjunction with Harris Interactive, will also be eleasing the results of a special Harris Poll during the session that looks at reader and non-reader perceptions about news-media in general and newspapers specifically.

The poll is being conducted in 6 countries: The US, Great Britain, France, Germany, Italy and Spain and will poll nearly 10,000 respondents.

The design of the report was done by Ian Cockburn and Guillermo Nagore.

Claude Erbsen, Marta Torres and I were the editors.

The Report opens with a special foreword written by Trevor Ncube, president of Print Media of South Africa and chairman of the Newspaper Association of South Africa (NASA).

This is our 9th annual Global Report since 1999.
