All these businessmen trying to buy newspapers in the United States say all the time that newspapers are just businesses for profit…

Well, INNOVATION has been saying for many years that the first (but not only) ethical duty of a newspaper is to make money.

So, I am for it.

But let’s be clear, you can’t run a newspaper like a sausage factory or a construction company.

No.

We are, we have been, and we must be social institutions.

Journalism and freedom of expression are in many constitutions.

Not making sausages or building houses.

Henry Luce the founder of Time used to say:

“What we want to do is not to leave to posterity a great institution, but to leave behind a great tradition of journalism ably practiced in our time. ”

I am not sure that all these billionaires are thinking or going to do the same.
