I am in Dubai (UAE) and the good news is this:
The new financial newspaper in Spain, EL ECONOMISTA, designed by a team of INNOVATION consultants, has been selected as one of the best designed newspapers in the world by an international jury of the Society for News Design (SND).
The paper was launched last year in Madrid by Alfonso de Salas, former president of El Mundo.
Carlos Soria and I were asked by Alfonso and Carlos Salas, the paper’s first editor, to produce different prototypes; Javier Errea, the INNOVATION consultant who also did the new EXPRESSO in Portugal, did the final design.
With Javier, we presented very radical models and the final prototype had a mix of these ideas — some very radical — including some logos that were not accepted in the end.
But the final product — with the help of Miguel Buckenmeyer, EL ECONOMISTA’s first art director (who, like Carlos Sala, left the paper this year) — is a clean, elegant and easy to read design, that has now won one of the few “Oscars” of newspaper design.
I was in Athens last week with Javier Errea and we were talking about EL ECONOMISTA.
We had wanted to develop the editorial model, too, but our client only asked for the design concept.
The reality is that the paper looks great but the content could be better.
This was a real frustration, and the big problem with this kind of award.
All of us know how hard he worked and how brilliant the result was with EL ECONOMISTA.
Ana Perez, Javier Errea’s assistant for production, deserves our thanks, too.
Congratulations to all the design and graphics staff of the paper.
They have not only implemented our project but improved it in many ways.
And thanks also to Carlos Salas and Miguel Buckenmeyer.
We had a graphic dream and they made it real.
See all the winners here and here.
Here are some pages from the real paper and also from the first prototypes and final style book:
