POLITICAL HELP? NO, THANK YOU

Le Monde says that the "Direction du Développement des Médias", a government office close to the Primer Minister of France is "very worried" about the crisis of the French newspapers.

When very unpopular politicians rush to "help" us, better say no.

No, thank you.

The whole system is about to collapse. French newspapers take advantage (we should consider it as a lifeline) of many public funds mostly to support their distribution costs.

In return they are supposed to "support the democratic debate" which means, in reality, providing an extensive (and boring) coverage of political news... It was a good deal during many years but it's far from readers interest...

Now the political tribes is facing a new threat: how to promote themselves if traditionnal newspapers loose their influence? Too soon to consider the web as "influent".

I just remember a funny story. One of the most famous and popular french newspaper, France Soir, is facing bankrupcy. Many investors tried in the last 20 years to save that piece of history and failed. The last team of investors, a few months ago decided to totaly revamp. They started to say "no more political section" in the print edition (no more culture too but sports and people stuff ...).

A few days after that announcement the french minister of culture (also in charge of funds for media) made a statement saying that France Soir could loose their right to receive public funds...
The day after the smart guys in charge of France Soir explained "it was a mistake to remove the political section" ...
