KARL GUDE LEAVES NEWSWEEK

An infographics pioneer is tired of New York.

Karl Gude tells the story in his new blog and becomes a Journalism professor in Michigan State University and leaves Newsweek.

Many years ago, Nigel Holmes left Time magazine.

Mario Tascon, the Spanish infographics icon of El Mundo, now is the leading force of Prisacom, the online arm of the publisher of El Pais.

Corrie Parsonson wrote me a few days ago: he left Reuters where he was the infographics editor.

Jaume Serrra left Clarin and now is back in Barcelona.

George Rorick and John Monahan are gone.

Why so many graphic gurus are not any more in the front of the news infographics battle?

I think that I know some of the reasons, that I will explain another day

But this is the most important one: infographic artists and departments are now isolated, and they are becoming as arrogant as irrelevant.

They lack the necessary passion.

I love infographics.

Many years ago, with Miguel Urabayen, we founded the Malofiej Infographics Awards, and it very sad to discover now that the gold years are almost gone, and some of the best stars are leaving the news stage.

Our beloved Peter Sullivan will be really mad .

And all this is happening while newspapers, magazines and online webs need more and better infographics than ever.

But I am happy to report that Pablo Ramirez and Javier Zarracina, our Infographic consultants, are real exceptions in this "a bout de souffle".

A new generation of infographic journalists are needed.
